Alan Steinmetz

General Counsel, Agency Lending

As Arbor’s General Counsel, Alan Steinmetz directs the legal process pertaining to all Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA loan activity. He also serves as an advisor to the Closing Department and Servicing and Asset Management in addressing post-closing issues and delinquencies/workouts. In addition, he is involved in the coordination of relationships among Arbor borrowers, counsel, investors and guarantors.

Mr. Steinmetz has decades of experience in real estate lending, finance, acquisitions, ownership, dispositions, workouts and restructuring. He has successfully closed several billion dollars of loans covering a full array of transaction types, including conventional financings, refinancing and assumptions, taxable and tax-exempt bonds, 1031 tax-free exchanges and forward commitments and conversions. He has also been integral to the growth of Arbor’s small balance lending programs and its industry-leading lender status. Throughout his career, he has performed real estate advisory and consulting services and directed work-outs, reorganizations and disposition strategies, including a transaction involving a large telecommunications company’s 5,000-property portfolio.

Prior to Arbor, Mr. Steinmetz was employed at Centerline Mortgage Capital where he served in a similar capacity and directly contributed to the growth in the company’s multifamily lending business, helping it progress from $500 million in annual production to close to $3 billion within five years.

Mr. Steinmetz has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brooklyn College and a Juris Doctor from New York Law School. He is a member of the Bar in the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He also currently serves as a member of Fannie Mae’s Legal Issues Forum.
